Places to Visit in Indore: Palaces, Temples, Food Streets & Day Trips

The best places to visit in Indore, grouped the way the city actually works: the old-city palaces and temples, the two famous food streets, the hills near the airport and the day trips — with where to stay for each.

Indore in one line

Indore is a food city with a Holkar-era heart. The palaces, the cenotaphs and the best-known temples sit close together in the old city, the two famous food streets are the main event, and the hills near the airport and the day trips to Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Mandu are there when you have more time.

Group the places by area, not by list — that is what turns a tiring day into an easy one.

The old city: Rajwada and around

  • Rajwada — the Holkar palace at the centre of the old city, and the natural place to start. Everything in this section is a short walk or auto ride from it.
  • Kanch Mandir (the glass temple) — a small Jain temple with a mirrored interior, one of the more memorable things in the city. Modest dress, shoes off, and check whether photography is allowed.
  • Krishna Pura Chhatri — the Holkar cenotaphs on the Khan River, a quiet heritage stop a few minutes from Rajwada.
  • Bada Ganpati — at the western edge of the old city, home to one of the largest Ganesh idols in India.
  • Annapurna Temple — one of the city's best-known temples, on the old-city temple circuit.
  • Lal Bagh Palace — the grandest of the Holkar buildings, a European-influenced palace on the Khan River, now a museum. Our Lal Bagh guide has the timings and entry details from when we last checked.

The food streets: Sarafa and Chappan Dukan

Indore's two famous food streets work at different times of day, which is the one thing most first-time visitors get wrong:

  • Chappan Dukan (56 Dukan) — the daytime food street, a cluster of shops in the newer part of the city. Go for lunch or an early evening snack.
  • Sarafa — a jewellery market by day that turns into a night-food market after the shops close. Go late, go hungry.

Graze Chappan in the day and save Sarafa for the night.

Temples across the city

  • Khajrana Ganesh — one of Indore's most revered temples, about 5 km from the railway station, busiest on Wednesdays, Sundays and through Ganesh Chaturthi. Go early on an ordinary weekday for a calmer darshan.
  • Bijasan Mata and Pitra Parvat — hill temples on the airport side of the city, best in the late afternoon when it is cooler.
  • Gomatgiri — a Jain site near the airport with a 21-foot Gomateshwar and 24 marble shrines.

Our temples guide covers the full circuit and which base suits which group of temples.

Slower afternoons

  • The Central Museum — regional sculpture and Malwa-region archaeology, a reasonable hour indoors on a hot afternoon.
  • Meghdoot Garden — a green space in the Vijay Nagar / Scheme No. 54 area, away from the busy commercial streets.

Day trips from Indore

Distances look short on a map; realistic road time is what matters, each way:

  • Patalpani Waterfall — about 35 km, allow about 1 hour 15. Best in the monsoon, and busy on monsoon weekends, so go on a weekday or early.
  • Ujjain — about 56 km, around 1 hour 40. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and the ghats on the Shipra.
  • Maheshwar — about 95 km, around 2 hours. The Narmada ghats, Ahilya Fort and Maheshwari saris.
  • Omkareshwar — about 83 km, realistically 2.5 to 3 hours because of the ghat section. A Jyotirlinga on an island in the Narmada.
  • Mandu — a hilltop fort city of palaces and ruins, at its most atmospheric in the monsoon.

Each of these deserves a day of its own. Bolting one onto a short Indore visit is how people end up seeing nothing properly.

How many days you need

  • One day: the old city (Rajwada, Kanch Mandir, Krishna Pura Chhatri), Chappan Dukan for lunch, Sarafa at night.
  • Two days: add Lal Bagh Palace, Khajrana Ganesh and the hills near the airport. Our weekend itinerary lays this out hour by hour.
  • Three days or more: add one day trip.

Where to stay for each

  • For the old city and Sarafa: stay near Rajwada or Sarafa and walk to most of it.
  • For trains: stay near Indore Junction (the railway station), which is also central.
  • For the airport-side hills and early flights: stay near Indore Airport.
  • For Chappan Dukan, Meghdoot Garden and the newer city: Vijay Nagar is the modern hub.
