Staying Close to the Temples
The single biggest comfort upgrade on a Ujjain and Omkareshwar yatra is sleeping close to where you need to be at dawn. This guide covers where to base yourself in each town and how to book it for less.

Ujjain: Where to Base Yourself
Ujjain has clusters of stays at different distances from Mahakaleshwar.
- Near the temple: the shortest walk to darshan and the best base for the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, and usually the most expensive
- Around the railway station: convenient for arrivals and departures, and generally more moderate
- Quieter outskirts: more space and often cheaper, but you will need a short auto ride to the temple
As a rule, rooms nearest the temple cost the most, a short auto ride out is cheaper, and weekends and festival days push prices up across the board. If you want the Bhasma Aarti, staying within walking distance is worth it.
Omkareshwar: Where to Base Yourself
Omkareshwar is smaller, so choices are fewer but simpler.
- Near the temple approach: closest to the island crossing, and typically the priciest
- Along the Narmada: calmer evenings and river views, at a range of prices
The same pattern holds: the closer to the temple, the higher the price, and festival days lift rates further. Book ahead when your dates fall on a weekend or festival.

- Distance to the temple on foot, in minutes
- Whether early check-in or late check-out is possible for aarti timings
- Whether meals are available, since some areas are strictly vegetarian
- Cancellation terms
