Two Jyotirlingas, One Trip
India has twelve Jyotirlingas, and two of them sit within easy reach of each other in Madhya Pradesh: Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar on the Narmada. Pairing them into a single yatra is one of the most rewarding short pilgrimages in central India.
This guide walks you through the route, the darshan basics, and how to keep the trip affordable so more of your budget goes to the journey itself.
The Classic Route
Most pilgrims arrive through Indore, the nearest major airport and rail hub, then branch out to both temple towns.
- Indore to Ujjain: about 55 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road
- Indore to Omkareshwar: about 78 km, roughly 2 hours by road
- Ujjain to Omkareshwar directly: about 140 km, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours, usually routed via Indore
A common plan is two nights in Ujjain and one night near Omkareshwar, though many pilgrims do it faster.
Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain
Mahakaleshwar is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga, known as Dakshinamurti, which makes it unique among the twelve. It is most famous for its Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn.
- Bhasma Aarti timing: pre-dawn, around 4:00 AM during Brahma Muhurat
- Advance booking: required through the official Mahakaleshwar temple portal, with limited seating and a photo ID needed
- Dress code: traditional only for the aarti, with men in a dhoti and women in a saree, and no western wear
Plan to reach early, since queues build quickly on weekends and festival days.
Beyond the main temple
Ujjain rewards pilgrims who linger a little longer.
- Mahakal Lok: the grand corridor leading to the temple, lined with sculptures and murals
- Ram Ghat on the Shipra: the evening aarti on the river is a highlight
- Kaal Bhairav and Harsiddhi: two revered nearby temples worth adding to your route
Festival crowds
Ujjain fills up around major Shaivite festivals. If your trip overlaps one, expect fuller temples and higher room demand.
- Mahashivratri falls in February or March
- Shravan Mondays fall across July and August
- Kartik Purnima draws large gatherings
- The Simhastha Kumbh returns to Ujjain in 2028
Festival dates shift every year, so confirm the exact dates for your travel year before you book.
Omkareshwar on the Narmada
Omkareshwar sits on an island shaped like the sacred Om symbol, in the middle of the Narmada river, reached by bridge and boat. The main Jyotirlinga is here, and pilgrims traditionally pair it with darshan at Mamleshwar, its twin shrine across the water.
- The island Parikrama runs about 7 to 8 km if you have the time
- The Statue of Oneness, a 108-foot statue of Adi Shankaracharya at Ekatma Dham, was unveiled in 2023
- The Govinda Bhagavatpada cave marks the spot where Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have met his guru
How Many Days You Need
Most pilgrims cover both temples in two to three days, depending on pace.
- A tight trip covering both temples works in about two to three days
- Adding the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti and an unhurried Omkareshwar visit is easier with an extra night
Where to Stay and How to Save

The simplest way to keep costs down is to book directly with the hotel. On ZECOHO, hotels list with zero commission, so the price you see is not inflated by a middleman markup. You send a booking request, the hotel owner accepts or declines, and you pay at the hotel — a straightforward request-and-confirm flow.
Book direct, save on every night, and put the difference toward your yatra.
