The middle of everything
If you only take one piece of advice about staying in Indore, take this one: Palasia is the default answer. Not because it is the prettiest part of the city, or the newest, but because it is the middle — and in a city where the interesting things are spread out, the middle is worth a lot.
Palasia, and New Palasia just beside it, is Indore's long-standing commercial heart. MG Road runs through it. The squares here — Palasia Square and Janjeerwala Square — are the reference points every auto driver in the city knows without needing a map.
It is dense, a little noisy, and thoroughly ordinary in the way a working city centre is. It also puts you a short ride from the old city, the malls, the stations and the restaurants. For a first visit to Indore, that is the right trade.
Who it suits
Stay in Palasia if it is your first time in Indore. You will not have worked out yet what you actually want to see, and this is the area that keeps every option short and cheap. From here, the old city and Vijay Nagar are both a modest ride rather than an expedition.
Stay here if you are not renting a car. This is the most walkable base in the city, and where you cannot walk, autos are constant and know where you mean. Vijay Nagar, by contrast, is built at car scale.
Stay here if you came to eat. Indore's food reputation is not marketing. Chappan Dukan — the "fifty-six shops" food street — is right here in New Palasia, and Sarafa Bazaar's night market is a short ride into the old city. You can eat extremely well without ever getting into a car.
Do not stay here if you want quiet. It is a commercial centre. There is traffic, there is horn, and rooms facing the main roads get both. Ask for a room off the road when you book — a normal request that most front desks handle without fuss.
Do not stay here if you need conference-grade facilities. Indore's business infrastructure is in Vijay Nagar. Palasia's hotels are generally smaller and older, and a large meeting is not what they are built for.
What is actually around you
- Chappan Dukan, in New Palasia — a compact row of food stalls and counters, made for grazing from one to the next. It is the single best reason to base yourself on this side of the city.
- MG Road — the main commercial run, with shops and restaurants along its length.
- Palasia Square and Janjeerwala Square — your orientation points. Give an auto driver either one and you will get there.
- The old city, a short ride west — Rajwada, the Krishnapura Chhatris, and Sarafa after dark.
Why being near Sarafa actually matters
Sarafa does not get going until 9 to 10 PM. It peaks between 10 PM and roughly 12:30 AM, and packs up around 2 to 3 AM. Which means the trip you should really be planning for is the one back — after midnight, full, and not wanting a long ride across a city you do not know.
That is the practical case for Palasia over the newer areas. The return leg is short, at the hour when a short return leg is worth the most.
The hotel stock, honestly
Palasia's rooms are a mixed bag in a way Vijay Nagar's are not, and that cuts both ways.
The range is genuinely wide — simple, clean, well-run places at the budget end, through to comfortable mid-range business hotels. Because much of the stock is older and independently run, the variation between two hotels at the same price is larger than you would expect. Read the listing properly here. The photos, the amenities list and the hotel's own stated policies are doing more work in Palasia than they would in a neighborhood of chain-standard rooms.
The upside of that same fact: independently-run hotels are exactly the ones that benefit most from zero-commission booking, and the ones where booking direct makes the clearest difference to what you pay.
A note on hotel policies
